The challenges and opportunities of IoT in the agricultural sector

How can the Internet of Things help to improve agricultural practices ?

11th april 2023

Agriculture x IoT

In the past few years, the agricultural sector has been at the centre of discussions, as it is both the larder of humanity and one of the most polluting sectors (21% of greenhouse gas emissions). In the past few years, agriculture and the IoT (Internet of Things) have been two areas that are increasingly converging. Indeed, the IoT makes it possible to connect different types of objects and collect data in real time, which can be very useful for improving performance and productivity in agriculture. It can be observed that many farmers have already realised the benefits of IoT solutions (250,000 in the US), and many are willing to invest more in specific “Agritech” services.

Agritech” is a new term that brings together the world of agriculture and new technologies. This combination of agriculture and technology is driven by 3 drivers:

  • Vehicle autonomy
  • Big data
  • New channels for more sustainable and responsible consumption.

Our solutions have been developed with the goal of improving the quantity and quality of production, while limiting food waste and environmental impact.

Healthy and optimised harvests.

Connected agriculture leads to more responsible, sustainable products and therefore fairer prices for farmers. This double challenge is assured by our solutions, which measure and control soil moisture and temperature to ensure optimal growing conditions. For example, irrigation can be controlled entirely remotely. The cultivation and harvesting of resources is also being transformed, thanks to the automation and remote control of traditional machinery.

Improve and control the transport and storage of resources.

According to several international institutes (SIWI, FAO and IWMI), 50% of the food produced is thrown away around the world. The solutions proposed by HIoTee make it possible to control the storage conditions in order to maintain the quality of foodstuffs. They also maximise the capacity of the tanks/silos to minimise and avoid food waste. Our solutions aim to protect farmers who are sometimes exposed to toxic gases emitted during the storage of foodstuffs, in case the storage conditions are not ideal. Finally, in the case of crop transport, our traceability solutions allow farmers to monitor their crops in real time, and worldwide

Minimise plant losses, water consumption and avoid disease outbreaks.

Monitoring the health of the plants until harvest is a time-consuming and expensive task that can be avoided by farmers. Thanks to our IoT solutions, we can predict epidemics that sometimes decimate entire fields. Our solutions enable precision farming with irrigation, soil and temperature sensors. This way, the exact amount of water needed for the crop is estimated to avoid wastage. By knowing the exact data, a profitable and more environmentally friendly distribution of resources is achieved.

By 2025, the world population is estimated to be around 10 billion people. It is therefore essential to develop more sustainable consumption patterns and to develop new agricultural and food resources!
